ALDRICH MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART

Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art

In June of 2010, the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, Connecticut opened one of KAWS’ first large scale exhibits.

Blending some of KAWS’ retrospective work with some new pieces. Some of KAWS’ largest pieces to date were also complimented by large scale figures. In addition, perhaps the most unforeseen KAWS creation of the exhibition was a preview of an upcoming MEDICOM TOY figure based on Pinocchio and embodying KAWS’ signature companion.

The exhibition explores KAWS’ appeal in the popular culture, showcases how KAWS’ work are easily accessible to everyone, and hence, immensely successful amongst a diverse audience. Aside from an uncanny ability to create provocative and iconic characters (often serpentine in form, often donning “X” for their eyes, and often extremely colorful), KAWS is known for pushing the boundaries between street and high art, and more often than not, blurring the boundary between both.
