KAWS X A Bathing Ape

Rare limited edition poster designed for Japanese fashion designer and impresario’s “A Bathing Ape” (BAPE) urban clothing line in 2003. This was an historic and famous early collaboration in KAWS’ career, introducing his work en masse to the Asian continent as well as the hip hop community, and helping lay the foundation for his global marketplace appeal with collectors of all ages and demographics.

Warm Regards

Warm Regards is one of KAWS’s most well known and often repeated images from his early days. He has painted it as a mural, made them into large sculptures, made a toy popsicle with them, and many more. A humorous artwork with a title match, this is sure to be a conversation piece wherever it is displayed.

Dissected Companion

GREY, RED

This macabre interpretation of one of KAWS’s favorite subjects – Mickey Mouse – examines the external and internal elements of the figure. In his signature style, the external is composed of simple shapes composing the body, the recognizable ‘X’ Eyes, but the interior contains much more detail in illustrating the organs and bones. Also different – the eyeball of the interior.

Blame Game

This collection of ten prints features a number of KAWS’s signature artistic elements – all brightly colored using bold lines, each piece also contains the artist’s recognizable ‘X’ design element somewhere in the photo. The illustrations each show a part of a cartoon character – a hand, the eyes, an open mouth – in close detail, making them the focal points of each of the images.

You Should Know I Know

You Should Know I Know is a screenprint in colors on wove paper that features KAWS’ signature X-ed out eyes, neon colors, and layering of abstracted shapes. The piece is centered around the mouth and teeth of Pop icon Spongebob Squarepants. In addition to Spongebob, KAWS has also repurposed the Pop icons Mickey Mouse, Snoopy and The Simpsons, into bright prints, paintings, miniature toys and monumental sculptures.

The Things That Comfort

This visually-striking rendering of Snoopy utilizes brightly-colored lines and geometric shapes to give it a figure. It is a very recognizable presentation of the artist’s work, particularly its easy-to-identify subject. The image lays flat on the page, though the effects that KAWS plays with in the color composition do create shadowing effects throughout the figure itself – particularly the colors and shapes that illustrate a hat of sorts on Snoopy.

This piece and its title convey a sense of irony – though the title is ‘Piranhas When You’re Sleeping’ the image appears to be of a dolphin, a typically friendly animal. This piece was created for and debuted at Art Basel Miami in 2016.

The subject of this portfolio of nine works by Kaws isn’t immediately clear because each piece is hyperfocused on small features, but in fact, these pieces show one of his favorite subjects – Spongebob Squarepants. Released in conjunction with the 2019 solo exhibition ‘Alone Again’ for KAWS at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Similar to the “outtake” works created and given as gifts to select donors of the Brooklyn Museum, the work presents a cropped-in section of a larger KAWS design, executed in the artist’s recognizable style.

Gone

An emotional depiction of loss, GONE, 2019, shows KAWS’s well-known characters COMPANION and BFF in a pose reminiscent of a classic pietà. 2020

COVID-19 Relief Fund Prints

5 Piece Set

The initiative launched earlier this April with an edition of 25 prints of a silhouette of the “Peanuts” comic strip character Snoopy, plus five artist’s proofs that are not up for purchase.
The prints are being offered for $1,200 a piece, with all proceeds going to the nonprofit Free Arts NYC that provides mentorship programs to underserved youth.
“Many of the vulnerable children they serve are staying in crowded shelters with little access to resources needed to stay inspired and resilient. Please consider supporting the organization, via a donation on their website or by purchasing a print, to raise money for supplies, activity kits, and virtual mentoring for their youth,” KAWS wrote on Instagram.
